Counselors at the Boys Town National Hotline had a heavier workload than normal last Wednesday, the nonprofit said.

The reason: the election.

"There were a lot of people who are experiencing either anxiety or just questioning how things were going to impact them in the future," said hotline supervisor Linda McGuire.

They provide the following tips:

  1. Encourage Open Dialogue – Let children express their thoughts and feelings about the election, creating a supportive environment.
  2. Promote Respectful Online Discourse – Guide youth on how to engage empathetically and avoid hostile interactions.
  3. Set Healthy Media Boundaries – Limit exposure to triggering news and social media to help reduce stress.
  4. Introduce Stress-Management Techniques – Simple coping methods like breathing exercises can help relieve anxiety. Children take cues from adults; staying calm helps them feel secure
  5. Seek Professional Support – if stress becomes overwhelming, reach out to Boys Town’s National Hotline (1-800-448-3000) or find a counselor for your family such as those at Boys Town for confidential, professional help for those needing extra support.

The Boys Town Hotline is reachable by calling 800-448-3000, by texting VOICE to 20121, YLYV@boystown.org, or downloading the Your Life Your Voice app.
