The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, previously known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, offers 24/7 call, text and chat access to trained crisis counselors who can help people experiencing suicidal, substance use, and/or mental health crisis, or any other kind of emotional distress. People can also call, text or chat 988 if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.
988 is intended to combat the growing problem of mental health issues in America. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people.
When you dial the number you are routed to local responders and all 988 calls in Nebraska currently go through Boys Town. Calls are handled by crisis counselors who are trained in suicidology, crisis de-escalation, safety planning, and Nebraska resource navigation.
Boys Town has also managed the Boys Town National Hotline since 2005.
